About these tools

Town Tools builds free, public tools for Kingston and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

Ontario lets you choose how you are charged for the electricity itself, and the three options are not priced the same for the same household. The regulator sets all three to recover the same cost from a typical customer, so the one that is cheapest for you depends entirely on when you use power. Prices change on 1 November every year — and this year the rebate on your bill is changing too.

When do you use electricity?

Pick the one that sounds most like your household. We estimate how your use spreads across the day from a typical pattern.

Monthly energy cost — summer (1 may to 31 october) rates

Tieredcheapest
$80.40 per month≈ $965 per year
that’s $21.17/month less than the most expensive plan
Tier 1
$67.20 (86% of your use)
Tier 2
$13.20 (14% of your use)
This is what you pay if you have no smart meter, or if you ask for it. The 1,000 and 600 kWh thresholds are the residential ones — the 750 kWh figure you may see quoted is for businesses.
Time-of-Use
$80.95 per month≈ $971 per year
Off-peak
$42.44 (67% of your use)
Mid-peak
$19.15 (19% of your use)
On-peak
$19.36 (15% of your use)
Ultra-Low Overnight
$101.57 per month≈ $1,219 per year
Ultra-low overnight
$8.28 (32% of your use)
Weekend off-peak
$12.38 (19% of your use)
Mid-peak
$29.92 (29% of your use)
On-peak
$50.99 (19% of your use)
Needs an eligible smart meter, like Time-of-Use. The overnight price is a tenth of the weekday evening one, which is the whole bet.

Estimate. We spread your use across the day using a typical pattern — your real bill depends on when you actually use power. Only you enter your kWh; the prices are the OEB’s regulated ones.

This compares only the energy cost — the one part your plan choice changes. Delivery, fixed charges, the OEB rebate and HST are added on every plan the same way and never change which is cheapest.
