Will the Lantern View Be Clear?

The odds each evening this week that the red-lantern view over the Pacific is clear at dusk on the Jiufen ridge, from the forecast model. It picks the evening with the best odds and shows how tonight looks — it never promises a clear sky, and it defers weather warnings to the Central Weather Administration.

Autumn — roughly October to December — gives the clearest evenings. The northeast monsoon from October to March pushes persistent cloud and fog onto the ridge, and the summer typhoon season from June to November is the wettest. Jiufen sits high and wet: about 2,177 mm of rain over some 222 rainy days a year.

Heavy rain reaches the road and the steps too

Odds, not a promise

This is a model’s best guess on a coarse grid, never a measurement and never a promise. Ridge fog forms and clears within minutes, and it can sit thick over one slope while the next is open — an area-wide number can’t show that. Treat it as odds: a good evening is a good chance, not a guarantee. Before you set out, look at the sky and a live webcam yourself, and for weather warnings — typhoons, heavy rain — go to the official weather service.

How the odds are read

The model’s low cloud, total cloud, visibility and rain chance across the window are banded only on published scales: Fogged when visibility drops below 1 km (the WMO fog line) or the ridge sits in near-overcast low cloud (~85%+, the WMO okta scale); Wet when the chance of rain reaches 60%; Hazy when the sky is broadly cloudy (~70%+) or visibility is in the 1–5 km mist range; and Clear otherwise. It never tells you the view is guaranteed — it describes the odds, and the weather-warning call belongs to the official service above.

The dusk ritual

The classic evening is the red lanterns glowing over the teahouses as the light goes, roughly 5 to 7 pm, with the lanterns lit after dark. The A-Mei teahouse viewpoint is the postcard spot and is crowded by default at this hour.

Rain doesn't thin the crowds

The Old Street lane is covered, so a wet evening keeps its crowd — the weather changes the view, not the number of people. Plan for the same crush whether or not the sky cooperates.

The quieter windows

The lanes are calmest before about 10 am and again after roughly 7 to 8 pm, once the day-trip buses have gone. If the odds look poor for one evening, the view often holds better earlier or later in the week than on any single booked date.
