The town marks the return of the sun after about a month of polar night — a bonfire and fireworks on the big night, with markets, music and family events around it. Held since 1988; the sun's first showing lasts about 23 minutes. In 2026 it ran January 9–11.
The first sunrise itself is in the first days of January; festival events cluster on the nearest weekend. Dress for deep cold — early January regularly sits below -30 °C.

The spring carnival — four days of races, traditional games, food and community events as the light comes back in force. In 2026 it ran April 10–13.

The northernmost greenhouse in North America — a converted arena where about 74 plots grow lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries and the occasional watermelon on 24-hour daylight. Tours, a seasonal café and market days run through the summer.
