The sky doesn’t get dark enough to see aurora right now.
Inuvik sits under the auroral oval, so the lights need almost no geomagnetic storm at all — on a clear, dark night a quiet sky is often enough. The limit here is darkness, not the aurora: from late May to mid-July the midnight sun never sets, and the sky is dark enough for viewing roughly from mid-August to late April. Through the polar night in December and early January it can be dark enough to catch a display in the middle of the day.

Inuvik's year swings between about 56 days of midnight sun and 30 days of polar night. The same sky that takes the aurora away all summer hands it back in winter — and the town marks the sun's return with the Sunrise Festival each January. Aurora season and the dark season are the same season here.
The auroral oval — the ring where the lights are most frequent — passes over the Mackenzie Delta. That means Inuvik doesn't wait for big solar storms the way southern towns do: ordinary quiet-night activity is often visible, and a moderate storm can fill the sky.
