The city sits in a warm pocket of the Rhine rift — one of the warmest places in Germany, with the Altstadt's stone and the valley walls holding the heat into the night. DWD's Hitzewarnung is issued when the day's felt temperature and the following night's minimum together make sleeping and working genuinely hard, not merely when it is hot. It is the summer warning worth acting on: the Neckarwiese and the shaded Philosophenweg are cooler than any street in the centre.
Storm warnings here are not the same as they are out on the Rhine plain. The Neckar valley narrows east of the Altstadt and the gusts follow it, which is why Sturm warnings tend to arrive with tree and scaffolding damage along the riverbank and on the Handschuhsheim side.
Heavy rain here often falls upstream, in the Odenwald and the Schwarzwald, and reaches us hours later as a river level rather than as rain. DWD warns about the rain; the HVZ warns about the Neckar. When one is running, look at the other.
