Fort Smith is divided into four wards. Each ward elects one director; the mayor and three at-large directors are elected by the whole city. On the ballot on Tuesday 3 November 2026: the mayor, at-large Positions 5, 6 and 7 — all three at-large terms expire on 31 December 2026 — and the change-of-government measure the Board of Directors voted onto the ballot on 18 August 2026, which would move Fort Smith to a mayor-council form of government. The four ward directors are not up until 2028.
