The City of Fort Smith collects your black trash cart, your blue recycling cart and your green yard waste cart every week — all three on the same day, but on three different trucks, so they rarely arrive together. Collection runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; Wednesday is kept clear, which is why a collection falling on a public holiday moves to the Wednesday of that same week. One cart per home (single-family up to fourplex) at the monthly service rate. Extra carts are $10 per cart per month, up to five. | Collected one day a week; your day depends on your address. Roll the cart to the curb by 7:00 a.m. with the handle facing your house and the lid opening facing the street, 3 feet of clear space on all sides, and not under a low branch or a power line or blocked by a car. |

Recycling cart Never bagged, and never overfilled: put recyclables in loose with the lid fully closed. One contaminated load can send the whole truck to the landfill. Not accepted: glass, plastic bags and film, wax-coated cartons, styrofoam of any kind, shredded paper, paper towels, napkins and tissues, takeaway containers and utensils, cords, wires, ropes and hoses, electronics and batteries, sharps, toys, aerosol cans, ceramics and anything with food on it. Pumps and spray nozzles go in the trash; the bottle can be recycled. | Plastic bottles, jugs, jars, tubs and cups numbered 1, 2 and 5, with the caps back on loosely; clean steel and aluminium cans; newspaper, office and school paper, magazines, catalogues, phone books, envelopes; flattened cardboard, cereal and cracker boxes, empty pizza boxes, kitchen and toilet roll tubes. Yard waste Christmas trees go out on a collection day with all tinsel, lights, ornaments, plastic and the stand removed. Everything collected is composted at the landfill, and residents can take compost back: first come first served, up to 2 cubic yards a week, at a discounted resident rate. | Leaves, grass trimmings, flowers and limbs. Branches up to 4 feet long and no more than 3 inches thick. Loose in a 32- or 96-gallon cart with the lid closed, or bagged — paper bags are better, because plastic ones have to be emptied by hand before the contents can be composted. Town Tools builds free, public tools for Fort Smith and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.
| Collected weekly, on its own truck, on the same day as your trash. A city 96-gallon yard waste cart is free on request, one per household. Without a cart, bundle and tie branches — no more than 18 inches across and 50 lb — and bag the leaves. |
Bulky items (Dial-A-Truck) Don't leave items near a mailbox, a gas meter, or under trees or power lines. | Appliances, couches, tables, chairs, mattresses, barbecue grills and lawnmowers. Glass, electronics and hazardous waste Questions about a specific item: 479-452-4101. Tyres are not accepted anywhere on site — Westark Collection Center, 601 Oak Grove Road, Van Buren, 479-652-3705, takes them off the rim for $3 each. | Glass IS recycled in Fort Smith — just not at the kerb. Clean, empty food and drink bottles and jars, lids and corks removed, go free to the Convenience Pad at the landfill (not mirrors, ovenware, drinking glasses, crockery or window glass). So do electronics — laptops, towers, monitors, TVs, printers, phones, tablets, consoles, microwaves — and household hazardous waste: motor oil and filters, antifreeze, brake and transmission fluid, car and household batteries, paints, stains, varnishes and thinners, over-the-counter pesticides, fluorescent tubes, aerosol cans, and used needles in a sealed heavy clear container. | Free to residents of Fort Smith and Sebastian County.
