Aarhus is a city that swims — summer beaches, and winter bathing and saunagus at the harbour. This page shows each official beach's EU bathing-water grade in plain words, and — because a grade is measured on calm days — a live read of how much rain has fallen, since stormwater and the odd sewer overflow can change the water the same afternoon.

Aarhus's worst swimming days come after heavy rain. The city is still separating its storm and foul sewers, so a big downpour can push stormwater — and, where the old combined sewers overflow, diluted sewage — into the bay and harbour. The yearly grades here are set from calm-day samples, so treat the day or two after a storm as worse than they show, most of all at Åkrogen and the harbour bath. Fløjstrup, with no known pollution source, recovers first.
Two different things
Aarhus Kommune — Natur og Miljø — grades each of the city's 20 official bathing stations and publishes a profile for each; the live daily warning is at badevand.dk
Denmark sets each beach's EU class once a year from the last four years' samples; these are the classes from the current profiles, and all six graded beaches are rated Excellent. Day to day, the water is judged by the live warning at badevand.dk — not by the yearly class — so check it before you swim, above all after rain.
