Since 2023 Aarhus households sort into ten fractions across a few two-part bins plus a red box — a change that had Kredsløb fielding thousands of questions a week. Type what you're throwing out to see which bin it belongs in. Your collection days are set by address: look them up on the kommune's site or the Mit Affald app.

All food scraps, cooked or raw — in the green caddy bag. Shares a bin with restaffald.
What's genuinely left once everything else is sorted out. Shares a bin with madaffald.
Clean paper: newspapers, magazines, envelopes, printer paper.
Clean, dry cardboard, flattened. Big boxes to the recycling station.
Glass bottles and jars, and metal — tins, cans, clean foil, lids. These two fractions share one compartment.
Plastic packaging, and food & drink cartons (milk, juice). These two fractions share one compartment.
Hazardous waste: batteries, light bulbs, chemicals, paint, spray cans. Into the red box — never a wheelie bin.
Worn-out textiles, bagged as their own fraction. Clothes still wearable are better given to charity or reuse.

Six full stations across the kommune — Lisbjerg, Hasselager, Viby, Risskov, Brabrand and Malling — open Mon–Fri 07:00–18:00 and Sat/Sun/holidays 10:00–17:00 (closed 24–26 & 31 Dec and 1 Jan). Two small inner-city near-stations (Godsbanen and Aarhus Ø) are open daily 07:00–21:00. Take big cardboard, electronics, garden waste, wood and rubble here.
At-home pickup of furniture and other bulky items is free but must be ordered in advance: enter your address at kredslob.dk to get a pickup date, then put items out no earlier than the evening before, by 06:00 on the day.
Small electronics can go to a recycling station or, per Kredsløb's scheme, in a bag on top of the bin. Anything still working is welcome at the stations' direct-reuse (Genbrugsguld) area.
The last word
Kredsløb runs collection and the recycling stations for Aarhus, and the kommune sets the rules. The scheme changed in 2023 and details still shift — this guide is the last word.
