Every café, chippy, takeaway, pub, shop, school kitchen and care home in the borough is inspected by Wigan Council's food safety officers and given a rating from 0 to 5. The ratings are public, and this page reads them straight from the Food Standards Agency's own register — so it is never out of date by more than a day.

What the rating does and doesn’t tell you

The rating covers how food is handled, the condition of the building and equipment, and how well the business manages and records food safety. It is not a verdict on the food itself, the service, the price or how allergens are handled.

It is a snapshot of one inspection on one day, and the date is shown beside every result. A business that has put things right can ask for a re-inspection, and a new rating replaces the old one.

Wigan Council inspects about 2,500 food businesses in the borough — the ones you order from and the ones you never see, including school and care-home kitchens.
Some low-risk businesses (the council calls them category E) are checked by a self-assessment questionnaire rather than a visit. That check does not produce a new rating, which is why a shop can look as though it has not been inspected for a while.
A rating is not a permanent verdict. A business that has put things right can pay for a re-inspection, and the new rating replaces the old one — the register shows a re-inspection is pending where one is on its way.
Displaying the sticker is voluntary in England, so a place with a good rating may not have one up, and a missing sticker means nothing on its own. The register is the reliable answer.
