Greater Sudbury runs seven supervised beaches across its lakes, with lifeguards on duty every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. between 13 June and 23 August 2026. Here's each one — where it is, where to park, and what's there — plus the honest story on water testing, which changed in 2025 and matters if you remember the old advisory signs.
Nobody routinely tests the beach water anymore
Public Health Sudbury & Districts ended routine beach water-quality testing in its 2025 budget, so city beaches no longer get regular E. coli sampling or the swimming-advisory signs that came with it. No posted advisory now means the water wasn't tested — not that it was tested and found safe. Use your judgement, especially in the days after heavy rain, and stay out of water that looks or smells off.
Blue-green algae still gets reported most summers
Blooms have been confirmed on Ramsey Lake and other local lakes in recent summers. When a bloom is reported, Public Health posts a notice on its alerts page at phsd.ca — that page, not a sign at the beach, is where to check. Treat water that looks like pea soup or spilled paint as a reason to keep people and pets out, and report suspected blooms to Public Health.
Unsupervised beaches
The city also lists unsupervised beaches with no lifeguards — Amphitheatre, New Beach and Maintenance Beach on Ramsey Lake, the Northern Water Sports Centre, Stewart Park, Silver Beach on Silver Lake, and Ella Lake Beach in Capreol. Each has a reaching pole and ring buoy. Everywhere, the city's advice is the same: children within arm's reach of an adult.
Bell Park Main Beach
The city's flagship beach, on Ramsey Lake in Bell Park off Paris Street — a short walk from downtown, with a playground and outdoor workout equipment beside it.
Wheelchair accessible, with a Mobi-Chair floating beach wheelchair available. Bell Park flew the Blue Flag in past years, but no Sudbury beach is on the 2026 Blue Flag list.
Dogs
Allowed in the park under the Animal Control By-law, but not in the designated swimming area. Trained service animals excepted.
Parking
Elizabeth Street lot, or the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre lot.
