Vermont Route 108 climbs from the Mountain Road up through Smugglers' Notch — the narrow gap between Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak — and down the far side to Jeffersonville. VTrans — Scenic Route 108 (Smugglers' Notch)
When the Notch is closed for the winter, the way to Jeffersonville and Cambridge is the long way around: Route 100 north to Morrisville, then Route 15 west — roughly 40 minutes instead of 20.
The road threads a gap barely wider than a single lane in places, past house-sized boulders and around blind hairpin turns, climbing between Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. It's a state scenic byway and a favorite foliage drive.
Oversize trucks have been getting stuck in the curves for decades. Before the state added deterrent barriers, eight to ten trucks a year wedged in the Notch; that's down to one or two now, but it still happens — almost always to a driver following a GPS past the warning signs.
