Soweto sits inside the City of Johannesburg (Region D), but the services are split across different entities — and electricity is the odd one out: most of Soweto buys power straight from Eskom, not the city's City Power. Buying prepaid electricity safely
Only buy tokens from registered vending points — supermarkets like Shoprite, Boxer, Usave and Pick n Pay, filling stations, banks and banking apps, or recognised electricity vendors. Eskom says any discounted-electricity offer on social media is fraudulent. Before paying money into any bank account said to be Eskom's, check it against the accounts published at eskom.co.za/distribution/banking-details, and always put your 10-digit Eskom account number (or 11-digit prepaid meter number) in the reference.
