A modelled estimate, not a measurement

Frost and fog change slope to slope and minute to minute — a sheltered terrace can frost while the road stays clear, and a bank of fog can roll in within the hour. This page is a model’s best guess, never a measurement and never a promise. Drive to the conditions you can see, cover tender crops on the cold nights, and for anything that matters use the official forecast.

How this page decides

Frost uses the UK Met Office frost definitions, applied to the forecast minimum air temperature: Ground-frost risk when the low is between 0 and 4 °C (surfaces can still cool below the air on a clear, calm night), Air frost when the air itself reaches 0 °C or below, and we call the coldest nights — around −2 °C and below — Hard frost.

Fog uses the standard WMO and Met Office fog definitions, applied to the modelled visibility: Mist from 1 to 5 km, Fog below 1 km, and Dense fog below 200 m. The number is the model’s visibility for the area, not a reading on your road.

For the house and the pipes

A hard freeze is the cue to protect the exposed water pipes and the line up to the roof tank, and to keep some drinking water in store. It is the burst pipe after the freeze, not the cold night itself, that leaves a village without water.

For the orchard

Through the dormant winter, roughly December to February, the bare apple and cherry trees ride out the hard cold. The frost that costs the crop is a late one on the open blossom, in April or into May — so a cold snap after the trees have flowered is the one to watch.

The high villages are colder

The reading here is for the town centre at about 950 metres. Qarsita and the other high villages, and the jurd pastures above them, sit higher and colder — expect the frost there to be harder, and to come a night or two sooner, than this page shows.

The freeze that cuts the taps

Danniyeh's winter hazard is not really the cold — the stone houses and bare orchards take it — but the highland water pipes, which run exposed and split when they freeze. In late February 2025 a cold wave burst the pipes and cut drinking water across the jurd villages for days. When a hard frost is forecast, that is the warning to store some drinking water and wrap the exposed pipe and the roof-tank line.

How the cold sits on the highlands

The town centre is around 950 metres; the villages of the jurd and the springs above it climb past 1,400. The hardest cold and the snow come in January and February, and the higher you are, the colder and the earlier it freezes. This page reads the forecast for the town centre, so the high villages will usually run a degree or two below the number here.
