Worth knowing

Fire season in the highlands

Danniyeh's fire risk climbs through the hot, dry months, roughly June to October. In June 2022 Army helicopters and the Civil Defence fought a forest fire in the Batroumaz and Sfireh woods of northern Danniyeh; the October 2019 fires were the worst Lebanon had seen in decades. Dry pine, oak and brush on the slopes carry a fire fast on a windy afternoon.

The forests this protects

Danniyeh holds some of the largest forests left in Lebanon, including a rare juniper (Lezzab) forest and old cedar on the higher slopes. Trees that took centuries to grow do not come back in a season, which is why an early call to 125 matters.

What a heat dot can — and can't — tell you

A satellite detection means the sensor saw something hot on the ground: it could be a real forest fire, but it could also be a farmer burning stubble, a charcoal kiln, or a rubbish fire. The satellite cannot tell which, and it can miss a small fire under cloud. Use this to know where to look, then trust what you can see and smell — and report anything spreading to the Civil Defence.
