Sibu is served by two councils and one water company, and none of them covers the whole district. The town inside Sibu Municipal Council's boundary and the rural areas around it — Sibu Jaya included — go to different offices, and rural water is a different department again. This page is who to ring for what.
Which of the two councils is yours
Sibu Municipal Council covers the town itself — about 130 square kilometres inside its boundary. Everything around it, roughly 2,100 square kilometres and Sibu Jaya with it, is Sibu Rural District Council. The two share one building: SRDC on floors 17 and 18 of Wisma Sanyan, SMC on 19 to 24. If you are not sure which one your street falls under, either office will tell you, and Talikhidmat takes the complaint whichever way it goes.
The water board has a new name
Sibu Water Board no longer exists. It was merged with Kuching Water Board and LAKU into Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd on 1 August 2025, and Sibu is now its Central Region. The old 24-hour number, 013-810 6311, still works, and the swb.gov.my website now redirects to Sarawak Water.
Water interruption notices go out on Telegram
Sarawak Water's Central Region posts every scheduled and unscheduled cut to a public Telegram channel, usually several times a week, with the streets affected and the expected hours. It also posts when the repair is finished. You do not need a Telegram account to read it in a browser.
