Worth knowing

The forecast office is in town

The National Weather Service office that writes these warnings — NWS North Platte, call sign LBF — is here, and it covers western and central Nebraska. Its office line is 308-532-4936, which is not for emergencies. One practical consequence: the people issuing a blizzard warning for Lincoln County are looking out of the same window you are.

A warning here is often about the road

Open country and wind mean snow that has already fallen can close a highway on a clear day. Blizzard and winter-storm warnings around North Platte have repeatedly come with closures on Interstate 80, which fills the town with stopped trucks and travellers. This page carries the weather warning; whether the road is open is Nebraska 511's answer, and it is linked below.

Grass fire is a warning season too

The same open country and wind that make a ground blizzard also make a fast grass fire, so this page reads the fire-weather zone as well as the forecast and county zones. A Red Flag Warning means conditions are right for a fire to run — not that one has started. Burn bans are the county's call, not the Weather Service's.

Snow Alert and Snow Emergency are two different things

The City declares a Snow Alert first when there is time: it asks you to move vehicles off city streets, especially the emergency snow routes. A Snow Emergency goes further — every vehicle must be off the snow routes, and one left there is ticketed $35 and then towed, with towing and storage charged to the owner. Both are declared through the Police 911 center, which tells the news media and rings everyone signed up to its code-red list. While an emergency is on, the City runs a 24-hour line on 308-535-6700. Plowing of the snow routes starts at roughly two and a half to three inches on the ground when a quick melt is not expected. Source: City of North Platte snow removal page, read 29 October 2026.
