The official EU grade for each of Klaipėda's six beaches — all six Excellent — and why that grade is not a reading from today.

This is the official EU bathing-water classification for the 2025 season. It is not a reading from today, and nothing on this page is a live test of the water.

A class is worked out once a year from every sample taken across a whole season, so the date shown below is the last day of the 2025 bathing season rather than the day someone took a sample. Lithuania's own in-season results — the Hygiene Institute samples each beach about every two weeks through the summer — are published only in Lithuanian, in a form we cannot read automatically, so we do not show them here.

The good news is worth saying plainly: all six of Klaipėda's official beaches are graded Excellent, the highest of the four EU classes, and every one of them has been graded Excellent in each of the ten seasons before this as well — 2015 through 2025, without a break.

The bathing season runs from 1 June to 15 September.

The rule that surprises people

All six beaches are graded Excellent, so the grade is not really what decides your swim here — the date is. The official bathing season runs 1 June to 15 September. Outside those dates nobody is sampling the water and nobody is watching the beach.

Why rain changes it

The class on this page is worked out from samples spread across a whole season, so it can tell you what a beach is normally like and nothing at all about the day after a storm. Heavy rain washes street run-off into the Danė and into the strait, and it is the one thing that can leave the water worse than the grade suggests. The rain figure above is a weather-model estimate, not a water test — treat it as a reason to give it a day, never as a reading.

Two different things

The class is a snapshot from a lab sample taken now and then — not a live status. The rain figure is a heuristic, not a test: it tells you stormwater may be running, never that the water is clean or dirty. Neither is a guarantee; after heavy rain, give it a day or two and favour the beaches graded highest.

Who grades the water

European Environment Agency — the samples behind these classes are taken and reported by Lithuania's Hygiene Institute (Higienos institutas); the EEA publishes the class each bathing water earns

The EU class is worked out once a year from all of a season's samples, and the European Environment Agency republishes it the following summer. Within the season the Hygiene Institute samples each beach roughly every two weeks and publishes the results in Lithuanian on hi.lt. Each beach's own official profile is linked below.
