Groceries here cost more than in southern Canada — this puts a number to it, using the Government of Nunavut's own 2025 survey, and explains where the gap actually comes from.
What would this cost in Iqaluit?
Enter what you’d expect to pay for a common weekly grocery basket in Ottawa, and see the estimate here.
Estimated in Iqaluit$151.00
About $51.00 more than the $100.00 you entered for Ottawa — 1.51× the reference amount.
The Government of Nunavut's 2025 Food Price Survey priced a 24-item grocery basket at $199.44 in the Qikiqtani region — Iqaluit's own region — against $132.44 for the same basket in Ottawa, about 1.51 times as much. It's a regional average across many households and stores, not a quote for any one receipt. Checked September 14, 2026.
Why it costs more here
The Nutrition North subsidy
Nutrition North Canada pays a per-kilogram subsidy directly to registered northern retailers for eligible food and some essential items, and retailers are required to pass the full subsidy on to the shelf price. Northmart, the North West Company store in Iqaluit, is registered. The rate depends on the specific item and is not the same for every food — see Nutrition North's own pages for what's covered and where.
Ordering directly, yourself
A resident — or a school, restaurant or small retailer — can buy eligible items straight from a registered southern supplier and get the same subsidy taken off the price automatically, with no store markup in between. Nutrition North publishes the list of suppliers that take these personal orders.
The slower route, for what keeps
Non-perishables ordered on the summer sealift typically land far cheaper than flying them in or buying them at the store. This site's own Sealift, Air, or Buy It Here? tool works out which channel is cheapest for a specific item.
This estimate applies one researched ratio to the amount you typed. It is not a quote for any specific item — real prices vary by item, by weight and by season, and this tool cannot see any of that.
This is one researched ratio applied to a number you type — not a quote for any specific item. The Nutrition North subsidy varies by food category and changes over time, and a personal order's landed cost depends on shipping and season.
