About these tools

Town Tools builds free, public tools for Guildford and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

River levels

Levels are measured against each gauge’s usual range — “above typical” doesn’t mean flooding, but it’s the first thing that moves when water is on its way.

Gauge	Speaks for	Reading	Level
Wey at Guildford	The town-centre riverside — Millbrook, Millmead, the Yvonne Arnaud theatre, and the town bridge.	1.165 m	Within typical range
Wey at Unstead Sluice	Upstream of the town, above Shalford and Peasmarsh — a rising reading here reaches central Guildford next.	4.197 m	No typical range published
Wey at Stoke Mill	Downstream of the centre — Stoke, Bellfields and the Slyfield edge.	29.267 m	No typical range published
Tillingbourne at Shalford	The Tillingbourne, which joins the Wey just south of the town at Shalford.	0.111 m	Within typical range

Each reading is metres on that gauge’s own scale, so compare a gauge with itself over time — not one gauge with another.

Worth knowing

Where flooding hits in Guildford

The lowest-lying, most flood-prone spots are Millbrook, Millmead, Walnut Tree Close and the Bellfields/Slyfield edge. The 2013–14 floods affected 130+ properties; temporary barriers went up in 2019 and 2020, and Millmead flooded again in March 2024.

The Guildford flood scheme

The Environment Agency's Guildford Flood Alleviation Scheme runs along the Wey from Millbrook to Ladymead and would protect around 750 properties. After public information events in January 2026, its outline business case went to government on 5 June 2026; if that is approved the scheme moves on to detailed design and then planning permission. No construction date has been published. Until it is built, warnings and preparation remain the main defence.
