Gjirokastër has no train and no nearby airport — you arrive by road, on intercity buses and furgons (shared minibuses) that run from the bus station on the valley floor, below the old town. Coaches leave for Tirana through the day, the coast at Sarandë is about an hour away, and the Kakavijë crossing into Greece is a short hop up the valley. The catch is the same one every road-only town has: the last bus out is earlier than you'd think, and timetables shift with the season. Plan your way back before you set off
There is no train. The buses out leave in the late afternoon, and missing the last one means staying the night. Note your last bus before you arrive:

Heavy rain and wind repeatedly shut or slow the Tepelenë–Gjirokastër (the 'Black Staircase' zone), Kardhiq–Delvinë (Skërficë tunnel) and Gjirokastër–Kakavijë axes, and can knock out power in outlying villages. If a storm is forecast, allow extra time, check before you set off, and don't count on the last bus running. Gjirokastër's rain outlook tool tracks the wet season.
Summer is the busy season
July and August fill buses with visitors and returning diaspora. Arrive early for a seat, and expect longer queues at the Kakavijë border.
