Can your boat be on the Dorpsgracht — Giethoorn's central canal — right now? The answer changes with the clock and the calendar, so pick your boat's width and group size and the checker reads the current time for you. It can't make the water safe; in summer always follow the on-water signs and the gemeente's official boating rules.

One-way — keep right between the markers
Most of the Dorpsgracht is one-way between marker 1 and marker 5 (paal 1–5). Follow the on-water signs and keep to the right.
Go slow — 6 km/h
The speed limit on the village canals is 6 km/h, about walking pace. Wash from a fast boat damages the banks and the old houses.
Hire and tour boats are electric
Rental boats and tour boats run on quiet electric motors — the fluisterboot (whisper-boat) is the norm. If you're hiring, you'll be in an electric boat.
Tour boats have right of way
The rondvaartboten (tour boats) always have priority. Give way and leave them room to pass.
Don't moor at or under bridges
Keep the bridges clear — don't tie up under or beside them. There are around 176 bridges and the canal is narrow.
