Every factory here is a short tuk-tuk ride from Ella town. Prices are what the factories and recent visitors report — confirm them when you book or arrive, because they change.
Prices are reported, not fixed
The best-known visitor factory near Ella, at 1,230 m with long views over the hills. A guided walk through the whole black-tea process — withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, grading — ends in a tasting and a café. Three levels of visit: a straight Factory Tour; a Plantation Tour that adds hands-on tea-plucking with a picker's basket and scarf; and a half-day Handmade Tea Masterclass where you pluck, follow the leaf through the factory, and blend your own tea to take home.
Ceylon tea is still picked by hand — overwhelmingly by Malaiyaha (Hill Country) Tamil women whose work rarely gets the same attention as the view. A few things keep a visit fair to the people whose labour it's built on.
A picker's daily wage was raised to LKR 1,750 with effect from 1 January 2026, under an agreement signed that month between the government and the regional plantation companies — and rights groups report many private-estate workers still earn less. If someone shows you how they pluck, or you join them, a direct tip reaches the person doing the work rather than the estate office.
Buying from the factory shop puts money into the estate that grew and made the tea, not a reseller in Colombo or abroad. It's also the freshest tea you'll find, and a small bag travels home easily.
The tea gardens are a workplace, and the pickers are people, not scenery. A smile and a question first — and showing someone their photo afterwards — is the difference between a portrait and a snapshot taken without consent.

Open daily, roughly 8:00 to 16:30; the masterclass runs in booked time slots through the day. Walk-in is fine for the shorter tours.

One of Sri Lanka's green-tea factories — built in 1903 and switched from black to green tea production in 2009. A tour walks you through how green tea is made and how it differs from the black tea the region is known for, and finishes with a tasting of fresh Ceylon green tea. It's close to the Nine Arches / Demodara side of Ella, so it pairs well with a bridge visit.
On the Ella–Passara road, about 4.3 km from Ella (roughly a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride).
Walk-in is the norm; we couldn't confirm official opening hours or a phone number this year, so it's worth having your tuk-tuk driver check it's open before the ride out.

A smaller, working factory tour that visitors praise for feeling authentic rather than staged — some of the machinery dates from the 1920s and is still in use. A guided 30–60 minute walk through the process, a tasting, and a shop.
