Dana Point calls itself the Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World, and in 2021 it became the first Whale Heritage Site in the Americas — whales and dolphins pass close to this harbor all year. Here is what is out there in each season, and how to go and see it.
Festival of Whales, every March
Blue whale — The largest animal that has ever lived, here to feed on summer krill.
Fin whale — The second-largest animal on Earth — fast, sleek and often around in late summer.
Dolphins — Common, bottlenose and Risso's dolphins live here and turn up on the great majority of trips.
Humpback whale — Acrobatic and increasingly common off this coast.

Southbound scouts pass from late December; the main run peaks January through March, then mothers and curious calves head back north in March and April.

A boat gets you closest, but on a clear day you can spot spouts and breaches from the bluffs — best during the winter gray-whale migration, when the whales pass nearer shore.
A pattern, not a promise
Town Tools builds free, public tools for Dana Point and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.
Follows offshore krill blooms, so the longer trips give the best chance. Peak is July and August.
