Where the water goes
Downtown municipal waterfront lot
The riverfront parking lot already floods on the highest tides today; on a king tide expect standing water across the spaces nearest the river. (The Maine Monitor, "Unstoppable ocean.")
Miles Street causeway
The causeway carries the route to MaineHealth's Miles Campus hospital and has closed in storm surge several times a year; the Schooner Road backup is not adequate for ambulances. A high tide alone may not close it, but it is the level that wind and surge build on top of. (The Maine Monitor, "Unstoppable ocean.")
How to read this
These are official astronomical tide predictions, in ft above MLLW. They tell you how high the water would rise on the tide alone, on a calm day.
Whether water actually reaches the street depends on wind, rain and storm surge on top of the tide. This is not a flood forecast. For warnings, follow the channel below.
Official warnings
National Weather Service — Gray, Maine, and Town of Damariscotta notices
Coastal-flood watches, advisories and warnings come from the NWS — they are issued when wind, rain or storm surge are expected to push water above the predicted tide. For local road closures, watch the town's notices.
Predictions are from NOAA's Newcastle station, on the Damariscotta River directly across from downtown — the station the town itself uses. Heights are in feet above the average low-tide line (MLLW).
Predictions: NOAA CO-OPS (Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services) tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. Station: Newcastle, Damariscotta River — Station tide tables. as of 9 July at 18:21.
