Bright sits on the valley floor at about 320 m, and on clear winter nights cold air pools here — the same inversion that traps woodsmoke also brings the hard frosts. A modelled estimate, not a measurement
Frost uses the UK Met Office frost definitions, applied to the forecast minimum air temperature: Ground-frost risk when the low is between 0 and 4 °C (surfaces can still cool below the air on a clear, calm night), Air frost when the air itself reaches 0 °C or below, and we call the coldest nights — around −2 °C and below — Hard frost.
Fog uses the standard WMO and Met Office fog definitions, applied to the modelled visibility: Mist from 1 to 5 km, Fog below 1 km, and Dense fog below 200 m. The number is the model’s visibility for the area, not a reading on your road.
A hard valley frost freezes exposed pipes and taps and glazes windscreens. If a frost is likely, wrap or drip outside taps overnight and leave a few extra minutes to clear the car — the coldest hour is usually just before dawn, not at bedtime.
Cold air pools lowest on the valley floor, so a Bright garden can frost when the slopes above stay clear. On a frost night, cover tender plants and citrus before dark; the strip below shows how many hours sit at or below freezing.
Winter mornings here are dark and often foggy as well as frosty. Black ice forms on bridges and shaded bends first. Give yourself more time and more room, and watch the fog line on the way out of the valley.
On still, clear nights, cold dense air slides down the surrounding ranges and settles on the Ovens Valley floor — a temperature inversion. Bright can be several degrees colder than the slopes just above it, and that same trapped layer holds the woodsmoke that the air tool tracks. Frost and smoke are two faces of the one calm, cold night.
