Town Tools builds free, public tools for Birdsville and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.

Neighbours are starting to report the roads — tap to see.
The roads in and out of Birdsville are long and mostly unsealed, and after rain a track that was fine yesterday can be cut for days. No official feed tells you how a track is right now, kilometre by kilometre — but the people who just drove it do.
If you've recently come in or out on one of these roads, tap it and say how it was: clear, slow going, or blocked. Everyone else sees the recent reports. It's a way for travellers and locals to pass on what the road authorities can't tell you until they next patrol.

Birdsville Track (from Marree)
About 517 km of graded dirt up from Marree in South Australia, past Mungerannie and Clifton Hills. The South Australian length is reported by SA's Outback road warnings (1300 361 033).
No reports yet
Windorah road (Birdsville Developmental Road)
The main eastern approach, about 386 km via Betoota — part sealed, part unsealed.

Bedourie road (Eyre Developmental Road)
North toward Bedourie and on to Mount Isa. Mostly sealed now, with a short unsealed section remaining.
These are neighbours, not an official service. Live closures and incidents are here: the Diamantina Shire road report — the council's own road report for the Queensland roads; QLDTraffic (13 19 40) covers Queensland roads statewide, and the Birdsville Track's South Australian length is reported by SA's Outback road warnings. These update when crews next patrol — which after rain can be a while.Report a hazard: 13 19 40
How this works
Each report counts for about 72 hours, then drops off on its own. A road shows once at least 1 recent report is in; when several are in we show the middle one, so a single voice can’t swing it.
These are reports from other travellers and residents, not an official road authority. Conditions on these long unsealed roads change fast after rain — check the official road report before you set out, carry the fuel, water and recovery gear these distances need, and in an emergency call 000. The Simpson Desert crossing west of town (the QAA Line over Big Red) is a separate 4WD route through Munga-Thirri National Park that closes each summer — check Queensland Parks for its seasonal dates rather than this board.
