Birdsville runs on two clocks: a long, hot summer when the heat and Channel Country floods all but close the town, and a cool, dry winter touring season that builds to two huge weekends.

January

February
The roads in can flood for days or weeks at a time. If you are not already here, this is not the month to come.
March
Heat is easing by month's end, but access can still be unreliable. The Simpson Desert crossing stays closed until 15 March.
April
The start of the touring shoulder. The Simpson Desert reopens from mid-month, roads are usually drying out, and travel gets easier.
May
One of the best months: comfortable days, cold nights, and the tracks at their most reliable. Quiet before the winter crowds.
June
Prime four-wheel-driving and Simpson Desert season. Pleasant and steadily busier as the touring season gets going.
July
The Big Red Bash (about 35 km west) draws roughly 10,000 people for three days, so the town and roads are at their busiest of the year that week. Book and carry everything well ahead.
August
Steady touring season, building towards the September Races. Good travelling weather and roads usually in their best winter condition.
September
The Birdsville Races on the first weekend swell the town from about 110 people to 7,000–9,000. Accommodation and camping book out months ahead and prices peak. Outside race weekend, fine touring.
