Ontario matches people to family doctors and nurse practitioners through Health Care Connect. Call 811, or register online with your Ontario health card (the address on your card must be current). Registering doesn't guarantee a match and no honest wait time is published — but you can only be matched if you're on the list. If you've registered before and need to update anything, call 811 rather than re-registering online.

Ontario pharmacists can assess and prescribe for 28 minor ailments — free with your health card, and many pharmacies take walk-ins for it. The list was 19 conditions until 1 July 2026, when nine were added: head lice, ringworm, jock itch, warts, calluses and corns, dandruff, dry eye, mild headache and nasal congestion. The older 19 include pink eye, urinary tract infections (women 16–64), cold sores, acne, hay fever and tick bites. For anything on the list, this is usually the fastest care in town.

For an actual appointment covered by OHIP, the East Region Virtual Care Clinic serves eastern Ontario patients who don't have a family doctor.

Quinte Health keeps a 'Know Where to Go' list of alternatives to the emergency department. In Belleville it currently names three, all on the north side of town. Hours — and whether they're taking walk-ins that day — change often, so phone before you go.
