Bandipur sits on a saddle just under 1,000 m, and almost every walk from the bazaar either climbs off it or drops off it. That matters more than the distances do: the shortest walk here gains 123 m, and the most popular one loses 400 m before you have to get it back. Heights below are measured from a digital elevation model against the bazaar, and the distances are straight-line unless a road distance is given — real paths wind, so allow more.
In the monsoon, these are different walks
From June to September roughly three-quarters of Bandipur's rain falls, and it changes every route here. Forest paths carry leeches. Stone becomes genuinely slippery, and the fixed ropes at Siddha Gufa on wet rock, above a 400 m climb home, is a materially harder proposition than the same walk in November. The Himalayan views that are the point of Thani Mai and Tundikhel are usually behind cloud. And landslides periodically close the road up from Dumre altogether, which can make the whole question moot — check the road board before you plan a day out.
Where these heights and distances come from
Positions come from OpenStreetMap and heights from an open elevation model, both read on 30 July 2026, measured against the bazaar. Distances marked straight-line are exactly that — a path that contours around a hillside will be longer. Where published sources disagreed about a fee, a time or a season, the range is given rather than a single figure, and where they disagreed completely the number has been left out instead of guessed.
Siddha Gufa
The largest known cave in Nepal — sources put it at roughly 430–437 m deep and about 50 m high — reached by a steep forest path down off the ridge. Inside there are fixed ropes to haul yourself up and down, bats, and no lighting of any kind. It is not a show cave, and it is the most demanding thing most visitors here do.
The thing to plan around: the cave sits about 400 m BELOW the bazaar. Walking down takes most people 50 minutes to an hour and a half — and then the same 400 m has to be climbed back at the end of the day, on the same slippery stone. Many people avoid that entirely by carrying on downhill to Bimalnagar (20–45 minutes) and riding back round. Fees vary by source and by who you are: entry is reported anywhere from Rs 20 for Nepali citizens to Rs 100–200, and a guide at the entrance from Rs 100–200. One source describes the guide as compulsory and another as optional. Carry small notes and settle it at the entrance. Opening hours are not stated here because the three sources we found disagree completely — ask in the bazaar before you set off.
Distance
About 1.6 km from the bazaar in a straight line, and considerably more on the path. From Bimalnagar on the highway below it is about 0.65 km.
Surface
Steep stone and forest path, slippery when wet. Fixed ropes on sections inside the cave, used in both directions. From Bimalnagar the approach is a stair climb of about 1,200 steps.
Good for
Sure-footed walkers with a hands-free light. Not suitable for small children, anyone unsteady on steep ground, or anyone uneasy in the dark or in enclosed spaces.
Start from
The bazaar, dropping off the ridge on the marked path — or from Bimalnagar on the Prithvi Highway, climbing the stairs.
Parking
None at the cave. Vehicles stop at the top of the village; the Bandipur bazaar itself is pedestrian.
Facilities
Torches can be hired at the entrance, but a head torch is better — you need both hands for the ropes. No water, no toilets, no phone signal inside.
Thani Mai and Gurungche Hill
The sunrise walk. Thani Mai temple stands on top of Gurungche Hill, the high point immediately above the bazaar, and the Himalayan skyline opens out from it on a clear morning. Short, but it is a genuine staircase climb rather than a stroll.
People walk this in the dark to be up for sunrise. Take a torch: the steps are uneven and there is no lighting. Thani Mai and Gurungche Hill are the same climb, not two different ones — the hill is the hill, the temple is on top of it.

About 0.6 km one way, gaining 123 m.
Surface
Stone steps and path, steep throughout — averaging around one metre up for every five forward.
Good for
Anyone comfortable with a sustained flight of steps. Fit walkers do it in 15 minutes; 30 is more usual, and there is no reason to hurry it.

The upper end of the bazaar, near the school.
Parking
None — the bazaar is pedestrian.

Tundikhel
A flat, open shelf on the edge of the ridge with the Himalayan skyline laid out north across the Marsyangdi valley. It was the parade ground when Bandipur was a district headquarters; now it is where the village goes to sit in the late afternoon.
The view is wide but lower than from Thani Mai, and it needs a clear day. From June to September cloud usually closes the mountains off completely, and that is not a sign you came at the wrong time of day — it is the season.

About 0.6 km one way.
Surface
Level path and open ground — it sits within about 2 m of the bazaar's own height, so there is effectively no climb.
Good for
Everyone. This is the one walk here that is genuinely flat, which makes it the realistic choice with a pushchair, with small children, or for anyone who cannot manage steps.

Parking
None — the bazaar is pedestrian.
Facilities
The silk farm
A working sericulture centre below the ridge, where silkworms are reared and someone will usually walk you through the process. A short, pleasant walk out; a steady pull back.
Two things worth knowing before you make the trip. There are no posted opening hours we could confirm, and reports of when it is staffed disagree, so ask at your guesthouse rather than assuming. And the worms are only being reared for part of the year — one source gives roughly August to December and again March to May, which means there may be nothing living to see in midsummer even if the building is open.
Distance
About 2.5 km each way by the road (roughly 1.2 km straight-line), around 30 minutes down.
Surface
Slate path out of the village, then paved road downhill, with the last stretch on dirt.
Good for
Anyone happy with a half-hour walk and a 146 m climb on the way home.
Start from
Leave the bazaar turning left at Heritage Guest House, follow the slate path to the paved road, then downhill. The farm is signed on the left, about 50 m past where the road turns to dirt.
Parking
Roadside near the farm; nothing at the bazaar end, which is pedestrian.
Ramkot
A Magar village of round stone-and-thatch houses along the ridge west of Bandipur, and the longest of the walks from the bazaar. The interest is the walk and the village itself rather than any single sight.
The spread in reported times and distances is real, and probably reflects that Ramkot is a scattered village rather than a single point — where you decide you have arrived changes the number. Start early and turn back on a time, not on a distance.
Distance
Roughly 5–6 km each way; reports of the time vary from about an hour and a half to two and a half hours one way, so treat it as a half-day round trip.
Surface
Ridge path, rolling rather than climbing — Ramkot sits about 50 m below the bazaar, so there is no sustained ascent in either direction.
Good for
Walkers with a half day and reasonable stamina. The distance, not the gradient, is what makes this one hard.
