Norðurland eystra stretches well beyond Akureyri, and the town is boxed in by the fjord walls — Súlur, Kerling and Strýta — which give it a more inland climate than most Icelandic towns, with bigger swings in temperature and often less wind than the coast in the same warning. A yellow wind warning can be a rough day on the heiði and an ordinary one on Ráðhústorg. The Met Office's own text usually says where in the region the worst of it will be; that sentence is worth reading.
Both routes south cross high ground — Öxnadalsheiði on the ring road and Víkurskarð, with the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel as the low-level alternative. Wind, drifting snow and ice on the passes are what close them, and a Met Office warning is normally in force before Vegagerðin changes a road's status. Check the warning, then check the road.
Akureyri gets measurable snow on around 123 days a year, so a warning is not about snow existing — it is about wind, visibility, sudden accumulation or ice arriving faster than the town can clear it. Nov–Jan average under an hour of sun a day, and December has about 3 hours 24 minutes of daylight, so a winter storm arrives mostly in the dark.
Both islands are in the same forecast region as the town, but a warning that is manageable on land can stop the ferry or the Grímsey flight. Sailings and flights are decided by their operators, not by the warning colour.
