The market

When: Every Thursday · 6:00 PM
Hours: Summer 6:00 PM–9:00 PM · Winter 6:00 PM–8:30 PM
Where: Five blocks of Higuera Street, between Osos Street and Nipomo StreetThe street closes to traffic and the stalls set up in the roadway.
Run by: Downtown SLOA 501(c)(6) nonprofit that runs the market — not the City of San Luis Obispo.

The 6 PM start is the same all year. Downtown SLO publishes summer hours to 9 PM and winter hours to 8:30 PM, but does not publish the date it switches between them, so the last half hour is the uncertain part of the evening.

Over 100 vendors across five blocks, including more than 20 farm stands.

A certified farmers' market under the California Department of Food and Agriculture: all farmers grow what they sell.

Year-round, and described by Downtown SLO as the nation's longest-running year-round night market.

Between 5,000 and 10,000 people a week.

Don't get towed: the street closes at 5 PM

The market boundaries are closed to traffic from 5 PM on Thursdays, and a car left inside them is towed or ticketed. Downtown SLO recommends the downtown parking structures; its parking page lists garages at 842 Palm Street, 919 Palm Street, 871 Marsh Street and 609 Palm Street, at $2.00 an hour with an $8.00 daily maximum (rates effective 8 July 2024). Some street parking downtown is signed no-parking from 5 to 10 PM on Thursdays because of the market.

Days with no market

Downtown SLO: "If a federal holiday lands on a Thursday, the Market will be closed that day. There is no Market on Thanksgiving." The dates below are worked out from the eleven federal holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103, matched on the holiday's actual date rather than the day the federal government observes it.

Thursday, November 26 — Thanksgiving Day

Worked out from the operator’s holiday rule, so this list can’t go stale.

The other markets in town

If Thursday is rained off, these are the other two markets in town. The Saturday one is run by the SLO County Farmers' Market Association, which says its markets are open rain or shine and close only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
