Namibia's government schools and hostels all run on one national calendar, set by the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture. Opuwo's schools follow it, and so do the hostels that learners from across Kaokoland stay in during term.
For a family two hundred kilometres out, the hostel dates are the ones that decide a journey: the day a learner has to be there, and the day they have to be fetched. Both are below, with the weekday for each, and the page says plainly whether school is on today.

Every government school and hostel in Opuwo and across Kunene — the calendar is national, so it is the same in Windhoek. Private and church schools set their own dates.

These are the ministry’s published 2026 dates. Individual schools also have minimum days, early-release days and events that aren’t shown here, and dates can change — the ministry’s official calendar, linked above, is the last word.
The three terms run 12 January – 28 April, 1 June – 20 August and 7 September – 4 December 2026. Hostels open the Sunday before each term (11 January, 31 May, 6 September) and close on the last school day of the term. Individual schools also set their own sports days, examinations and closing ceremonies, which are not shown here. The 2027 year is expected to start on Monday 11 January, which the ministry publishes as provisional. If the ministry's calendar and this page disagree, the ministry is right — and please tell us.
