I don't have an NHS dentist and need to find one

You do not "register" with an NHS dentist for life the way you do with a GP. You can go to any practice taking on NHS patients, even outside Norwich, and you don't have to live in their area. Which practices are accepting changes from week to week, so the only reliable way to know is to phone and ask.

Steps to take

Use the official NHS Find a dentist tool
Search by postcode, town or city. Each listing shows the practice's contact details and whether it says it's accepting new NHS patients. It is the live national source — start here.
Phone the practices on the list
Acceptance changes constantly and the website can lag behind. Ring and ask directly: "Are you taking new NHS patients?" Ask for an NHS appointment specifically — some practices do both NHS and private.
Ask to be told when a list opens
If a practice isn't taking anyone now, ask them to note your interest and to let you know when they next open their NHS list. Then check back yourself every few weeks.
Widen your search beyond Norwich
Because you can use any practice regardless of where you live, try increasing the search radius — surrounding towns and villages sometimes have space when the city does not.

Even a practice marked as "accepting" on the website may have filled its list by the time you call. That's normal here — keep a list and keep trying rather than relying on a single result.

I'm in dental pain right now / it's urgent

You can get urgent NHS dental care even if you don't have a regular dentist. If you already see a dentist, ring them first. Otherwise, NHS 111 is the way in — they assess your symptoms and put you in touch with an urgent dental service.

Steps to take

If you have a dentist, phone them first
Ask for an urgent appointment. You should be offered urgent treatment within 24 hours to 7 days depending on your symptoms.
No dentist, or out of hours? Use NHS 111
Call 111 or go to 111.nhs.uk. They will assess you and point you to a dental practice offering urgent NHS appointments, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Don't contact a GP — they cannot provide dental care.
Manage the pain meanwhile
Over-the-counter painkillers taken as directed can help. A pharmacist can advise on what's suitable for you while you wait.
Knocked-out adult tooth? Act fast
A knocked-out adult tooth needs treatment within about an hour, or as soon as possible — contact 111 or a dentist straight away.

Some things are a real emergency, not just a dental problem. Call 999 or go to A&E if you have heavy bleeding from your mouth that won't stop, swelling of your mouth, throat or neck with difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a serious injury to your face or head. Do not drive yourself — ask someone to take you or call 999.

I'm pregnant, have a child, or am on a low income

Some people get NHS dental treatment completely free, and others can get help with the cost. The charges are fixed national prices, so it's worth checking whether you qualify before you pay anything.

Steps to take

Check if your treatment is free
NHS dental treatment is free if you're under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education, pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, or getting certain benefits such as Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or Universal Credit (within the income limits).
Know the fixed charges if you do pay
There are three set bands in England (from 1 April 2026): Band 1 is £27.90 (check-up, X-rays, scale and polish), Band 2 is £76.60 (fillings, root canal, extractions) and Band 3 is £332.10 (crowns, bridges, dentures). Urgent treatment is £27.90. You pay the same band price at any NHS dentist.
On a low income but not on those benefits? Apply to the Low Income Scheme
The NHS Low Income Scheme can give you an HC2 certificate (full help) or HC3 (partial help) towards dental and other NHS costs.
Bring proof to your appointment
Take evidence of your exemption or certificate (for example your maternity exemption certificate, benefit award, or HC2/HC3 certificate) so you aren't charged in error.

Free treatment and the Low Income Scheme apply to NHS care, not private treatment. If a practice offers you a private plan, ask whether you qualify for free or reduced NHS treatment first.

I want to join waiting lists / nothing near me is accepting

Norfolk and Waveney is one of the hardest places in England to get an NHS dentist, so coming up empty is common and not something you've done wrong. There's no single waiting list to join, but there are steps that improve your odds over time.

Steps to take

Ask every practice to note your interest
When a practice says no, ask them to record that you want an NHS place and to contact you when their list reopens. The more practices that have your details, the better your chances.
Check back regularly
Lists open and close without notice. Re-run the NHS Find a dentist search and re-ring practices every couple of weeks rather than waiting to be called.
Contact your local NHS (ICB)
If you can't find anyone accepting, the Integrated Care Board manages dental services and may be able to point you to where appointments are available.
Keep urgent care in your back pocket
If you're in pain while you wait, you do not need to be on a list — NHS 111 can get you urgent treatment regardless.

No one should charge you a fee simply to join an NHS waiting list. If you're asked to pay a membership to "wait" for NHS care, that's a private plan, not the NHS — you're free to say no.
