You can get urgent NHS dental care even if you don't have a regular dentist. If you already see a dentist, ring them first. Otherwise, NHS 111 is the way in — they assess your symptoms and put you in touch with an urgent dental service.

Some people get NHS dental treatment completely free, and others can get help with the cost. The charges are fixed national prices, so it's worth checking whether you qualify before you pay anything.
Check if your treatment is free
NHS dental treatment is free if you're under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education, pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, or getting certain benefits such as Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or Universal Credit (within the income limits).
Know the fixed charges if you do pay
There are three set bands in England (from 1 April 2026): Band 1 is £27.90 (check-up, X-rays, scale and polish), Band 2 is £76.60 (fillings, root canal, extractions) and Band 3 is £332.10 (crowns, bridges, dentures). Urgent treatment is £27.90. You pay the same band price at any NHS dentist.
