The Okavango Delta floods in the dry season, not the rains — water that falls in the Angolan highlands in summer takes about four months to reach Maun, so the channels are fullest in June and July while the sky stays clear. That is the pattern behind the pattern below.

A pattern, not a promise

May–August is peak: the flood is at its fullest, game concentrates around the remaining channels, and August is widely reckoned the best month for predator sightings. September and October bring the most intense predator-prey action as pools shrink further, in temperatures that can pass 40°C.

December to February is peak, with over 200 species recorded and breeding colonies active. Birds start arriving with the first rains in October and November and thin out again as the dry season sets in from March.
