Getting Care on the Island

Where to go for care when there is no bridge — the medical center's winter days, the 911 route to its emergency room out of hours, the hospital and the pharmacy across the Straits, and how you actually get to each one.

If it's life-threatening, call 911

Chest pain, trouble breathing, heavy bleeding, signs of a stroke, a bad fall, someone who won't wake up, or a baby arriving now — call 911 and stay on the line. An ambulance crew starts treatment where you are and takes you to the hospital that can treat the problem, which is not always the closest one. Help comes to you, so don't try to make your own way out, and don't wait to read the rest of this page.

On an island with no bridge, where to go for care is partly a question about the boat. The medical center on Market Street handles everyday problems and has an emergency room with a doctor on call around the clock — but it is open weekdays only, and it closes on Wednesdays through the winter. Anything it cannot do is across the Straits. Pick what you need and this page will tell you where to go and how you get there.

Something serious, right now

Chest pain or trouble breathing · Heavy bleeding, or signs of a stroke · A bad fall, or someone who will not wake up · A baby arriving

Calling 911 on the island brings the ambulance, and it is also how you reach the medical center's emergency room outside its opening hours. If you need to cross the Straits, 911 arranges that too — Mackinac Marine Rescue, the city's own 31-foot boat, handles medical evacuations, and a flight can be arranged where one is needed.

If you are not sure whether you are well enough to cross, call before you plan a boat. The medical center's number is answered in hours and 911 at any hour, and both are answered by people whose job is to work that out with you.

A prescription, or something from a pharmacy

Motor vehicles have been banned here since the village council acted in July 1898, and the island has no bridge. Everything off the island is a ferry crossing or a flight, so this page gives you the stages instead of a drive time.

There are no drive times on this page because there is nothing here you can drive to. Each off-island place carries the crossing instead, stage by stage, using only the times the operators themselves publish. None of those stages includes the wait for the next sailing, which is usually the longest part of the journey — so check the boat before you set off.

What each place does — and does not do

911

Emergency number · The island's ambulance, fire and police — and the way to the doctor out of hours.

Mackinac Island EMS is part of Cheboygan Life Support Systems, and the island has its own ambulance. In a real emergency let 911 arrange the crossing — do not go and stand at the dock.

Mackinac Island Medical Center

Dr Gregory Hessler is the physician listed for the center. The health system's own page gives both season's hours and they overlap at the end of April, so the week either side of 1 May is worth a phone call. Anything the island cannot treat means a crossing.

What has changed

From 1 November the medical center shuts on Wednesdays

Through the winter the medical center opens weekdays 10am–3pm and closes on Wednesdays. Out of hours, and on a winter Wednesday, calling 911 is how you reach its emergency room — the health system's own page says 24-hour emergency services are available on that number.

The winter boat starts on 1 November

Arnold Transit's winter ferry from St. Ignace begins on 1 November and runs as long as the ice is not too thick. The 2026-27 timetable had not been published when this page was last checked, so confirm the sailings with the operator. When the boat stops, the air services from the island airport run all year, by reservation.

Official pages

This page says where services are and how far away they are. It cannot tell you how serious your problem is, and it is not medical advice. If you are unsure, call — the numbers here are answered by people whose job is to work that out with you.

Hours, phone numbers and the services a place offers do change, sometimes at short notice. Call before you set off, and treat the official page as the last word.
