Which zone is a place in?

Type an area, a suburb or a landmark. Nothing you type is stored, logged or counted.

Rubbish collection in Lusaka is contracted out zone by zone. The city council and LISWMC divide the city into waste management districts and zones, and each zone is franchised to a private collector — so “who is supposed to collect my rubbish” has a real answer, and it is a company name that depends on which zone your gate falls in.

That register is public, but until now the only way to read it was a map widget on another site. Find your area in the list below, or type a place near you. Everything here is read from the register as it stands today.

The scale is worth knowing. The Ministry of Local Government’s Permanent Secretary for Technical Services said in September 2025 that Lusaka generates about 1,200 tonnes of solid waste a day and that only about 40% of it is formally collected. The city council’s own 2022 figures divide Lusaka into 24 waste management districts and 183 zones, served by 16 franchise contractors in the planned areas and 111 community-based enterprises in the peri-urban ones.

A collection day here is the collector’s own round, not a promise about one street.

What this page cannot tell you

No collector is listed for this zone

For 15 of the register’s 39 zones, no collector is named at all — and a great many people in Lusaka live in them. If your area comes back that way, that is not a hole in this page. It is what the register says, and it is the most likely answer to why nobody comes.

Two things are still worth knowing. Zone letters are not all the same size, and several of the big ones have smaller zones inside them that do have a collector. Kanyama is the clearest case: zone K has nobody listed, while the Great Kanyama zones inside it run rounds six days a week. So where exactly you are standing matters, and it is worth dropping a pin at your own gate on the register’s own map rather than trusting the middle of an area. And registering is still what puts a household on a round when one starts.

What it costs

Nobody publishes what collection costs here, and that was checked rather than assumed: LISWMC’s own website does not load, the city council’s security certificate expired in June 2026, and neither the Ministry of Local Government nor the Zambia Environmental Management Agency publishes a rate card.

The one current statement about money is LISWMC’s own, on its registration page: it confirms your collection rate before any billing starts. So the figure exists, and the moment to ask for it is before you agree to anything. An amount quoted to you second-hand, or found in an old news article, is not a published price.

Getting onto a collector’s round

Verify your phone. Enter your mobile number and type in the six-digit code sent to you by SMS.
Pin your home. Stand at your gate and let the map find you — the zone and the street are worked out from the pin, and you can drag it if it is not quite right.
Your account number arrives by SMS. Use it with your phone number to sign in, pay a bill and follow collections.

Registering is not agreeing to a price. LISWMC’s own wording is that it confirms your collection rate before any billing starts, so that is the moment to ask for the figure — and to ask for it in writing.

Burning and dumping

Dumping waste, and running a collection service without a licence, are offences that the police enforce. Under the Solid Waste Regulation and Management Act No. 20 of 2018 the Zambia Police can arrest people and businesses found illegally dumping waste or operating an unlicensed collection service, and take them to court; LISWMC and the council police work with them on it. At a police workshop in November 2025 the ministry’s Permanent Secretary put it plainly, saying enforcement covers “the mandatory utilisation of, and payment for, legal waste collection services”.

The reason it is treated that seriously here is the rains. Lusaka drinks mostly from the rock beneath it — about 78% of the city’s water comes from groundwater, through municipal wells and thousands of private boreholes, above a city where most households use pit latrines. What is left in a drain in November is in the water in January.

LISWMC holds the franchise contracts and is the body to ask about your zone, your collector and your rate. It was set up under the Solid Waste Regulation and Management Act No. 20 of 2018, and part of its statutory job is to hold public inquiries on proposed tariffs and recommend them — which is the honest explanation for why there is no published rate card yet.

Two of its published contact routes do not work, and it is worth knowing before you waste a call: the phone number printed in the Clean Lusaka footer is a placeholder, and the liswmc.gov.zm email address is on a domain that does not resolve. The route that does work is the complaint form on the register’s own site, which gives you a tracking number.
