How this page decides

Heat uses the National Weather Service’s heat-index categories, applied to the modelled feels-like temperature: Caution 27°C–32°C, Extreme Caution 32°C–39°C, Danger 39°C–51°C, Extreme Danger 52°C and up.

Air uses the US EPA air quality index: Good 0–50, Moderate 51–100, Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups 101–150, Unhealthy 151–200, Very Unhealthy 201–300, Hazardous above that. The number here is that same EPA index, computed by Open-Meteo from the Copernicus CAMS model.

Each hour takes the harder of the two constraints, and the strip says which one. A “best window” means hours where the feels-like temperature stays below 27°C (below the NWS Caution band) and the air is no worse than Moderate — the EPA’s general-population activity cautions start at 101. No thresholds on this page are ours.

Reading it for your plans

Okada and keke riders

Commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders are in the open for the whole shift, with no shade and nothing to cool the air moving past. The hour-by-hour strip is the useful part here rather than the day's peak: the working day cannot move, but a break can.

Traders at the riverside markets

Market trading is outdoor work, and the cover over a stall is usually partial. Setting up and packing down sit at the two ends of the day, which are the ends where the feels-like figure is lowest.

Waiting at the Felele terminal

The Lokoja Mega Terminal at Felele is where inter-state road passengers wait, and the waiting is done outdoors. Departure time is not the passenger's to set, so the figure to read is the one for the hour you expect to be standing there, not the hour you leave home.

Walking between the two FUL campuses

Federal University Lokoja runs on two sites — Adankolo, and the permanent site at Felele on the Abuja road — and students move between them and into town on foot or by keke. The strip above shows which part of the teaching day is hardest to be out in.

Worth knowing

NiMet's advice: out of the sun between noon and 3 pm

During a national heat spell in March 2025 the Nigerian Meteorological Agency advised people in Kogi, Niger and the FCT to avoid exposure to direct sunlight between 12 pm and 3 pm, and to drink more water to avoid dehydration and heat stroke. It put the day's maximum for those states at 40°C and the minimum at 23°C.

Lokoja has been read at 39°C

NiMet's weather outlook for 19 February 2025 put Lokoja among eight places reporting 39°C — with Sokoto, Kebbi, Makurdi, Abakaliki, Ikom, Jalingo and Yola — and said maximum temperatures across the country were mostly between 38 and 40°C. That is the air temperature; the feels-like figure above is a different number, and usually a higher one.

The heat peaks before the rains, not during them

Averaged over the thirty years to 2025, the hottest stretch for this area on the feels-like measure is February to April, and the mildest month is August. March runs an average daily high near 37°C and an average daily feels-like high near 41°C — about four degrees apart. These are modelled figures for the grid square around the town, not a station record.

A power cut takes the fan away at the hottest hour

Lokoja is supplied by AEDC, and how many hours it supplies is a long-running complaint here. Reviewing 1–25 August 2024, NERC found that the Ajaokuta Confluence Lokoja feeder had delivered an average of 19.80 hours a day against the minimum 20 hours a Band A feeder promises, and ordered AEDC to compensate the customers on it. A cut removes the fan at the hour it is most needed, which is why the timing of an errand counts for more here than it would where supply is steady.
