Kecskemét sits on the Homokhátság sand ridge, one of the driest corners of the Great Plain, under 550 mm of rain a year. In 2026 the chief medical officer put the whole country under a heat alert in late June and again at the end of July, the second time at third degree. This page is the plain answer to the question that follows: where can we actually go right now? The air-conditioned public buildings, the water and the shade, with what is open at this minute. Nearly a fifth of the district is over 65, and heat is hardest on them — if that is someone you know, this is a page worth sending them.

About official cooling centres
Kecskemét does publish a list, which is more than most towns manage. During the heat alert of late June 2026 the city named the places anyone could walk into and cool down: the Hírös Agóra foyer on Deák tér, the ESZI ground-floor waiting room and the Katona József Library's main hall on Piaristák tere, the Széchenyiváros, Hunyadiváros, Kisfái and Matkó community houses, and the City Hall visitor entrance. Two things to know about that list. It is announced per heat alert rather than kept as a standing page, so it is not something you can look up in advance — and the entries below are the ones whose opening hours we could check against the building's own page, which is why the community houses and the ESZI waiting room are named here but not listed as places above. None of them is a shelter: they are ordinary buildings that are open and cool.
Everything on this page is an ordinary public place that happens to be cool — a library, a pool, a park. None of it is an official cooling centre or an emergency shelter, and none of it is staffed to help someone who is already unwell. Dry air means shade brings real relief here — but only early, late, or on a milder day. In the middle of a summer afternoon, shade alone is not enough.
KEFAG's arboretum on the eastern edge of town — real closed canopy and deep shade on ground that is otherwise blowing sand. Admission is free, and in summer it stays open until 8 in the evening, which is when the shade here is worth having.

Water cools you fast, but a splash pad in open sun is still open sun — bring hats and shade, and watch the youngest.
The city runs mist gates (párakapu) on Kossuth tér, on Deák tér in front of the Agóra, and two more at the Széchenyi tér bus station, and counts 46 public drinking fountains and water points across the city. The gates are switched on for hot weather rather than to a published season, so on a mild day they may be off. During a heat alert there is free bottled water at the Budai utca market hall, the Szent László körút fairground and the railway station.
Air conditioning is the only kind of relief that works whatever the hour and whatever the temperature. These are open to the public.

Town Tools builds free, public tools for Kecskemét and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.
A park forest of about 30 hectares on the western edge of town, planted by Kecskemét schoolchildren in the 1960s and managed by KEFAG, with benches, tables and shelters along the paths. It is open ground at any hour — but it is hemmed by the M5, Route 52 and industrial land on three sides, it is being replanted with drought-tolerant species because the soil under it has dried out, and there is no water and no shop out there.

The Széktó park on the north-west edge of town — water, grass and mature shade trees together, which is the combination that actually works on a hot afternoon. Entry has stayed at 100 Ft for years and under-14s go free, making it the cheapest whole-afternoon answer in the city. It also hosts festivals in high summer, when the ordinary ticket does not apply.

The city bath, next door to the leisure park: the competition pool, the thermal pools and the élményfürdő, all indoors and out of the sun. The pools run 6.00–20.30 every day of the year, which makes this the one entry on the page that works before work and after dinner.

The city-centre shopping centre, air-conditioned throughout. It is not on the city's heat-alert list and it is not a civic building — it is here because on a Sunday in August every place that is on that list is shut, and this one is open.
