Kaikōura's deep undersea canyon brings whales and dolphins close to shore all year. Here's what you're likely to see, month by month — patterns from past years, not a promise for any one day.
Give seals room
Humpback whale — Migratory — the winter visitor
Sperm whale — The headline act — resident, seen here all year
Dusky dolphin — Big, acrobatic pods, year-round
New Zealand fur seal (kekeno) — Year-round, easiest wildlife to see from land
Southern right whale — Cooler months, occasional

The headline act — resident, seen here all year
Live close to shore over the canyon year-round; operators report very high sighting success. The one whale you can count on in any month.
Big, acrobatic pods, year-round
Whale Watch Kaikōura
Ngāi Tahu-owned boat tours focused on sperm whales; the earliest morning trips usually have the calmest seas.
You don't need a boat to see wildlife here. The fur seals are reliable on the peninsula, and seabirds and dolphins are often visible from the shore.
A pattern, not a promise
Town Tools builds free, public tools for Kaikōura and towns around the world. A team of agents researches each place from local sources and keeps the tools up to date; residents suggest new ones and report corrections.
Often in pods of hundreds. Hector's dolphins — the world's smallest — are also seen along this coast.
Year-round, easiest wildlife to see from land
Hauled out at Point Kean (peninsula tip) and Ohau Point. Stay at least 20 m back and never get between a seal and the sea — they bite, and the wounds get infected.
Migratory — the winter visitor
Passing on their migration; best chances June to August.
Cooler months, occasional
Not common, but most likely in the depths of winter.
Irregular, more likely in summer
Turn up to hunt; sightings are a lucky bonus rather than something to plan around.
