Hallstatt has one road in, a railway station on the far shore of the lake, and about a million day-visitors a year for 760 residents. Where you arrive — and where you park — decides whether the day goes smoothly. Pick how you're travelling and here's the plan.
The old centre is closed to visitor cars
Two barriers block cars from the historic village — even hotel guests can't drive through. Day-visitors park at the edge (P1–P4) and walk in, or come by train and cross on the ferry. Coaches must book an entry slot in advance.

All four lots share one tariff: 15 minutes free, then €5 for 1 hour, €9 for 2, €10 up to 4 hours, €12 up to 6, €15 up to 12, and €20 for a 13–24-hour day ticket (a lost ticket is €40). Spaces can't be booked and the lots fill by late morning in summer. Pay at the machine before you leave.
Hallstatt has a single road in — the B166 along the lakeshore, with the 1966 tunnel bypassing the centre — and its railway station sits on the opposite shore. That's why where you arrive, and where you leave the car, matters so much here.
