Worth knowing

Tornado season and the sirens / Temporada de tornados y las sirenas

Spring is siren season on the High Plains. The city's outdoor warning sirens sound for tornado warnings, and Ford County emergency management runs the storm spotters and shelter guidance. The NWS office here has seen it all — its own list of historic weather events is filled with tornado outbreaks, ice storms and blizzards, including the 2007 EF5 that destroyed Greensburg, 40 miles east.

Even without heavy snowfall, hard wind over open country whips fallen snow into ground blizzards with near-zero visibility. US-50, US-283 and US-400 close in these conditions and travelers get stranded in town. If a winter storm warning is up, check KanDrive before starting any highway drive.

Dodge City is regularly ranked the windiest city in America — the average wind is about 13.9 mph, and a calm day is the exception. The wind direction is its own kind of daily news: a south or east wind carries the feedlot smell into town. Locals call it the smell of money.
