Daylesford has had no train since 1978. The only way in and out without a car is V/Line route 301 — a coach from town that meets a train at Woodend or Ballarat for the rest of the way to Melbourne.
The coach is the easy part. The hard part is getting home: the last connection leaves Melbourne in the early evening, and missing it means waiting until the morning. For exact times and to book, always check V/Line.

The coach runs Daylesford – Trentham – Woodend, where you change to the Bendigo-line train. Coming the other way, the last weekday service from Southern Cross that connects through to Daylesford leaves around 17:25 (into Daylesford about 19:20); only on Friday nights does a later one run, getting in about 20:40. Miss the last connection and the next is the morning.

The coach runs Daylesford to Ballarat, where you change to the Ballarat-line train. A few late services change at Castlemaine instead. Ballarat itself — with its hospital and shops — is about an hour by this coach.

On a Catastrophic fire-danger day, the coach may not run
V/Line does not run this coach while a Catastrophic fire danger rating is declared for any fire district it passes through. On those days, don't count on it — check Fire Danger Today and VicEmergency, and plan another way home.
Weekends are much thinner
Saturday and Sunday run only about two or three services a day, and the last one back is earlier than on weekdays. If you're out for the day on a weekend, check the last departure carefully before you go.
