Type your address and this tells you the public school districts that serve it. In Bakersfield that is almost always two districts, not one: one of fifteen separate elementary districts for kindergarten through 8th grade, and Kern High School District for grades 9–12. Which elementary district you get depends only on which street you live on. Your high-school district is the same one as everybody else's — Kern High covers the entire city.
So a family here deals with two districts, two offices, two enrolments and two calendars. A child on Calloway Drive enrols with Fruitvale for K–8, then separately with Kern High for 9th grade: different boards, different bell schedules, different first day of school. Nothing about the K–8 district decides which high school comes next.
The lookup reads the federal address file, and a very new address may not be in it yet — the northwest and southwest subdivisions go up faster than the file is updated, so a house finished last year can come back as "couldn't find that address". If that happens, use the district's own "find your school" page in the list below, or call the district office.
Two more things worth knowing. The boundaries come from the Census Bureau's January 2025 school-district file, which describes the 2024–25 school year — district lines move rarely, but the city annexes land and opens tracts every year, so confirm with the district if the answer looks wrong for your street. And a "Bakersfield, CA" mailing address is not the same as living inside the city: Oildale, much of Rosedale and the Lamont fringe are unincorporated Kern County, and they have their own elementary districts.

High school · 9th–12th grade
Every address in Bakersfield is in this district. Whichever of the fifteen elementary districts serves a house for K–8, the high school comes from here. It is California's largest grades 9–12 district and not close — about 43,000 students across 19 comprehensive high schools, five continuation schools, an adult school and two career-technical centres, spread over 2,987 square miles of Kern County. Enrolment for 9th grade is separate from the K–8 district and happens through the high school itself.

The K–8 district for central and east Bakersfield, including downtown — about a third of the city's area and the largest district here, with 45 schools and roughly 27,400 children. It publishes no address locator, so the only way to confirm which school serves a house is to ask the district on (661) 631-4600.

The K–8 district for the southwest quarter of the city — a quarter of Bakersfield by area and the second largest here, with 25 schools and about 19,400 children. Much of the new southwest housing sits in it, and it adjusts its own school attendance boundaries as those tracts fill, so check its locator again each year.

The K–8 district for Rosedale on the northwest side — nine schools and about 6,050 children, in one of the fastest-building parts of the area. Much of Rosedale is unincorporated county with a Bakersfield mailing address. The district publishes no address locator, so call the office to confirm a school.
