Queenstown has picked up a handful of new rules and bylaws in the last couple of years that residents and seasonal workers keep having to look up — parking, camping and snow chains. Here's where each one stands, in plain words.
In force from 2026; a $750 fine applies when conditions require chains and you're not carrying them.
In snowy or icy conditions, you must carry snow chains on council-managed roads — including the Crown Range and the ski-field access roads. From 2026 the council can fine drivers $750 for not carrying chains when conditions require them. Carry them and know how to fit them before you head up; two-wheel-drive vehicles without chains are turned back.
In force since 1 December 2025.
Overnight freedom camping is restricted to designated sites and certified self-contained vehicles. You can't simply park a campervan overnight on residential streets. The bylaw sets out the designated sites across the district and the penalties for camping outside them. Check the QLDC site for the current list of legal sites before you stay the night.
Proposed (10pm–6am); under active council consideration as at 2025–2026 — check before relying on it.
After complaints about long-term and overnight parking on Park Street and Lake Esplanade, the council has been considering an overnight parking ban from 10pm to 6am on those streets. It was not yet final as at mid-2026, and no resident parking permit scheme has been introduced alongside it. Check the QLDC parking pages for the current position before assuming a street is available overnight.
