Who to Call in Neiafu: Emergency and Service Numbers
911 for any emergency, 922 police, 933 ambulance, 944 for power faults — plus Ngū Hospital, the pharmacies, the Waste Authority, the wharf offices and volunteer marine rescue. Numbers that two sources disagreed about are left out, and the page says which.
Tonga has one general emergency line and three short codes beside it, and all four work from any phone in Vavaʻu. Everything on this page was read from the Vavaʻu Port Officer guide (version 2026/18, 18 October 2026), and checked against a second source wherever one exists: Tonga Power's own press release for 0800 123 and 944, and France's foreign ministry for Ngū Hospital's 70201.
No fire number for Vavaʻu, and no police landline
Sunday closes almost everything
In an emergency
Any emergency — 911
Fire, police, ambulance or a power fault. The operator asks what has happened and passes you to the service you need.
- Phone
- 911
Tonga Communications runs the line. Its chief executive confirmed in 2018 that 911 covers every emergency service, after a house fire in Nukuʻalofa raised doubts about it.
Police — 922
The short code for the police anywhere in Tonga. Vavaʻu police also keep a radio watch on VHF channel 16.
- Phone
- 922
Ambulance and Ngū Hospital — 933
An ambulance, or the hospital switchboard in an emergency, anywhere in Tonga.
- Phone
- 933
Tonga Power faults — 944
A power cut, a line down, a leaning pole or a dead streetlight.
- Phone
- 944
Tonga Power said in February 2025 that 944 and 28344 stay in service alongside the new toll-free number.
Vavaʻu Volunteer Maritime Response Association
Volunteer marine search and rescue for Vavaʻu waters, call sign “Vavaʻu Radio”. A Tongan incorporated society since 2018, working under a 2020 memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Police: trip watch for police and customs boat crews, safety equipment, and communications coordination during a search.
- Phone
- 8465645
On the radio, call on VHF channel 16 — the hailing and distress channel. Channel 26 was the island’s working channel for years, but the Port Officer guide’s own channel list records it as having died during 2026, with a replacement repeater on channel 60 still under test, so 16 is the one to reach for. The association’s second phone is +676 7565645; its web address was not resolving when it was checked on 22 October 2026.
Health
Ngū Hospital, Talau
The only hospital in Vavaʻu: outpatients, dental, an optometry technician, and a pharmacy. For an ambulance, call 933.
- Phone
- 70201
- Hours
- Ministry of Health counters 9am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday
- Website
- health.gov.to
A second switchboard line is +676 70204. Monday is the busiest day for dental. If you are kept in overnight, bring your own bedding and someone to look after you; the ward buildings date from 1950 and were photographed in disrepair by the town officer in February 2026.

Tonga Power is the only electricity supplier in Tonga and runs Vavaʻu's diesel station and the solar farms beside it. Outage notices go up on its website one at a time and on its Facebook page; there is no outage map.

Second line +676 7555210. The petrol stations do not take cards.
Lulutai Airlines, Vavaʻu office

Both of Lulutai's web addresses were parked registrar pages when they were checked on 21 October 2026, so there is nothing to link to. Flights have been grounded and cancelled at short notice more than once since 2025, so phone before you travel.
