Garbage & Recycling Days in Minot
Type your address for your two collection days and which week the blue recycling lid goes out, read live from the City's own calendar.
Minot collects twice a week, and the Monday or Tuesday half of that alternates between garbage and recycling — which is why "pick up garbage on recycling days!!!!!" turns up three times in the City's own 2023 survey comments.
Worth knowing
What goes in the blue lid, and what ruins a load
Minot's recycling is all-in-one: everything goes in the one bin, loose, with the lid closed. Plastics #1, #2 and #5 only. No plastics #3, #4, #6 or #7, no shredded paper, no plastic bags, no glass, no electronics, no hazardous materials, and nothing bagged. Rinse food and drink containers out first. Recyclables can also be dropped at the landfill.
Holidays, and when the make-up day is
Nothing is collected on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas (24 and 25 December). If the holiday falls on your day, the City collects on your next scheduled day; recycling make-up is on the Wednesday. Certain holidays are also made up for garbage so that every house gets at least one collection that week.
What it costs, on the water bill
The monthly charge depends on the cart you have and appears on the residential water bill: 35-gallon $15.00, 65-gallon $17.50, 95-gallon $20.00, plus $2.60 for recycling. An extra garbage cart is $10.00 a month and an extra recycling cart $2.60. You can swap a cart for another size free once a calendar year; after that it is $30.00 a swap. A damaged cart is replaced free if a City crew damaged it, and at the resident's cost otherwise.
The landfill: hours, and what a load costs
4450 37th Ave SW, about 2.5 miles west of Walmart. Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 12 October 2026 to 10 April 2027, then 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from 13 April to 10 October. Scale and landfill: 701-857-4719. Municipal solid waste $51.00 a ton ($10.00 minimum), inert waste — lumber, shingles, glass, metal — $37.00 a ton ($5.00 minimum), trees $15.00 a ton ($5.00 minimum), recycling $185.00 a ton ($3.00 minimum). Car tires $3.00 each, truck $5.00, tractor $15.00, heavy equipment $25.00. Cash, cheque or card. Every load has to be covered or enclosed, and loads are inspected at random. Household hazardous waste — paint, stains, varnish, solvents, oil, pesticides, herbicides, cleaners — is taken free all year round from City collection customers. Yard waste is free.
The landfill is shut on some holidays and half-open on others
Closed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas (25 and 26 December) and 4 April for Good Friday. Open 8 a.m. to noon on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day and Veterans Day.
What the carts will not take
Paint and paint cans, stains, motor oil, car and lithium batteries, ashes, concrete and brick, propane tanks, tree branches, grass trimmings, construction and demolition debris, tires, dirt and rocks, and hazardous waste. All of it can go to the landfill instead. Animal waste has to be bagged before it goes in the cart. Nothing should be packed in — the contents have to fall out freely when the cart is tipped.
Yard waste, branches and Christmas trees
City crews do not collect yard waste. Grass, leaves, weeds, garden waste, apples and sod go to one of ten compost sites around town, or free to the landfill — never mixed with household waste, and the compost sites are for City collection customers only. Branches cut by the householder are collected by a separate truck through the week as time permits: cut and bundled in 6-foot lengths, logs no more than 10 inches across, and nothing over 40 lb. Trees cut by anyone else are not hauled by the City. Christmas trees go to compost site 3 or 7, open 21 December to 17 January — not into a cart.
Bulk items, roll-offs and the valet service
Call Public Works on 701-857-4140 to book a bulk pickup: $15.00 an item at the curb, for couches, beds, end tables, bookcases, computer desks, lawnmowers, snow blowers, barbecue grills and appliances. Building materials, concrete, brick, carpet, windows, dirt, boxes, fences, tires, sheet rock, siding, shingles, kitchen cabinets and TVs or computers are not bulk items. A 20-yard roll-off for a big pile is $100.00 each time it is dumped. Residents who cannot get a cart to the curb for a medical reason can apply for the valet service — call Public Works for the form, which a doctor signs, and renew it each year.
Clean-up weeks, 2026
Spring clean-up was 4–8 May 2026 and fall clean-up 14–18 September 2026, by quadrant — see the clean-up week map on the City's site for which day is yours. Set waste out before 7 a.m. on the boulevard only; anything that is not a garbage can is thrown away with the rest. Up to ten tires and propane tanks are accepted during a clean-up event, but no televisions or computers, and no paint, stain, oil or varnish. With photo ID and a current City of Minot water bill, household quantities went free to the landfill during clean-up week and from 6 to 11 July 2026 — no contractors, contractor vehicles or dump trucks. The 2027 dates are not published yet.
