Mestia has two ways in: a small plane that flies only when the pilots can see the mountains, and one long mountain road. Most good plans use both — book the flight if you can get a seat, and know the road as your fallback.
The flight is a weather bet — always keep a road fallback
Vanilla Sky flies to Mestia's Queen Tamar Airport under visual flight rules only. Roughly 15–20% of flights cancel for weather, most often morning fog or cloud; a cancellation means a refund or the next available seat, not compensation.
Book flights early — the planes are small and seats go first in season.
If the flight cancels, the road still runs: about 4 hours from Zugdidi by marshrutka.
Leave slack around onward connections — don't book a same-day international flight against a Mestia departure.

Overnight and day trains link Tbilisi with Zugdidi, and marshrutkas continue from the station. The municipality publishes the Mestia end: vans leave Mestia for Zugdidi at 08:00 and 12:00 and start back at 12:00 and 15:00, 35 GEL one way. Winter tires are legally required on the road December–March, and it closes for a few days most years after rockfall or avalanche — the Zugdidi–Mestia road weather page on this site reads the corridor point by point.

Direct vans exist and the municipality publishes their Mestia departures: Tbilisi (Vagzali or Samgori), Kutaisi and Batumi all leave at 08:00, once a day. They go from the stations on the main square — the number the municipality gives is +995 591 81 04 21. The train-plus-Zugdidi route is still the steadier bet if the road has been closed.

Through the seasons
Winter (December–March)
Winter tires are legally required on the Zugdidi–Mestia road. Road closures are likeliest in late winter and early spring, after rockfall or avalanche — most years cost the road a few days.
The Zagari pass back road
The road out the top of the valley — Ushguli over the Zagari pass to Lentekhi — is 4x4-only and open roughly June to October. It is never a winter alternative.
