The town page now opens with a drawing of the hundred-year-old rain trees leaning out over the flooded mining pools, with Bukit Larut in the rain haze behind them.
New townTaipingTaiping goes live: JAKIM's prayer timetable, and where the town actually floods
Taiping is live with two tools. **Waktu Solat** shows JAKIM's published timetable for zone PRK06 — the same times the mosques here keep, rather than times we work out ourselves. PRK06 reaches beyond the town to Selama, Bagan Serai and Parit Buntar, and includes Kamunting and Matang; the page says so. It also carries something we did not expect to find: Bukit Larut is a separate JAKIM zone, PRK07, and the difference is real — from 1,250 m you see the sun 4 to 5 minutes earlier and lose it 3 to 4 minutes later than the town below. If JAKIM cannot be reached, the page falls back to times computed from the sun and says clearly that it has. It works offline once loaded. **Where Does It Flood?** is the record rather than a forecast. Taiping's flooding is flash flooding from short violent rain, and it lands on the same peri-urban kampungs each time while the heritage core stays dry — so this page maps the places it has happened, from the 274 people evacuated in November 2022 through Kampung Simpang Halt in September 2023 to Kampung Batu 25 on Jalan Trong in June 2026. It names the schools, mosques and suraus that reopen as relief centres, the closure of the Taiping R&R on the expressway in October 2025, and who to call. Nothing on it can go stale, because none of it is a prediction. We looked at putting a live river gauge here and decided against it. The nearest one is about 15 km west on the Sungai Kurau, and the Sungai Larut through the town centre is not gauged at all — a distant river's level would have looked authoritative while describing something other than what floods Taiping. The right live source is rainfall, which JPS also publishes; their rainfall feed is currently returning empty rows, and we will build it when it is serving data again.
