Where to go for care on Sherbro Island — what the island's hospital can do, what has to go to the mainland, and how Sierra Leone's health system is meant to work, level by level. Boat-only means planning ahead: for anything the hospital here can't handle, you'll need a crossing.
Uganda’s public health facilities go up in steps. Knowing which step you need saves a wasted journey — a Health Centre II can’t admit you, and a hospital is far for a cough.
Maternal & Child Health Post (MCHP)
The smallest local post: antenatal check-ups, child immunisation, and treatment for malaria and everyday illness. No admissions or surgery.
Community Health Post (CHP)
Basic outpatient care for common illness and injury, close to home. Refers anything serious upward.
Community Health Centre (CHC)
A larger centre with trained staff: outpatient care, normal deliveries, and maternal and child services. The chiefdom-level referral point.
District / General Hospital (Hospital)
Inpatient beds, emergencies, surgery, blood transfusion and emergency care for childbirth. Where serious cases are meant to go.
Regional / Referral Hospital (Referral)
Specialist and complex care beyond a district hospital — in Bo or Freetown. Off Sherbro Island: a boat crossing and a road journey.
Government facilities are the public system. Under Sierra Leone's Free Healthcare Initiative, care for pregnant women, new mothers and children under five is free — but medicines, tests and transport are often not covered, so bring what money you can.
Warm pins are hospitals and Health Centre IVs (the higher levels of care); blue pins are Health Centre IIs and IIIs and clinics. Pick a need above to highlight the facilities that can help.
